Center
for Wound Treatment joins national trial
Farrell
and Greenville, PA — The UPMC Horizon Center for
Wound Treatment has joined a national clinical trial to test the
effectiveness of a new drug used for treating diabetic foot ulcers.
According to
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 15 percent
of all diabetic patients will develop a foot ulcer during their
lifetimes. These foot ulcers are open wounds that typically occur
on the bottom of the foot.
The goal of
trial is to test the safety and effectiveness of an investigational
topical gel for diabetic foot ulcers. The medication may offer a
therapeutic option to patients affected by chronic foot wounds.
“We’re
very excited to be part of this national research effort to reduce
the amputation rate of patients who suffer from diabetic foot ulcers,”
says Thomas Serena, MD, medical director of the Center for Wound
Treatment.
Participants
in the clinical trial will be compensated for time and travel and
will receive free study-related materials and lab visits. The study
is expected to last at least five months.
Anyone who suffers
from chronic foot wounds related to diabetes who are interested
in participating in the clinical trial should call Becky Fry, enterostomal
therapist, at 724-589-6254.
