UPMC
liver cancer specialist to see patients locally at Womancare Center
in Hermitage
Hermitage,
PA — David A. Geller, MD, nationally-renowned hepatobiliary
surgical oncologist specializing in the treatment of liver cancers
and co-director of the UPMC Liver Cancer Center, will begin seeing
patients at the Womancare Center in Hermitage in December.
Hepatobiliary
surgical oncology focuses on the evaluation and management of patients
with liver cancers. Dr. Geller’s expertise is laparoscopic
(minimally invasive) liver resections, or the removal of portions
of the liver affected by cancer.
Dr. Geller earned his medical degree from Northwestern University
and completed a decade of postgraduate training at UPMC, which included
advanced training in liver transplantation and liver cancer surgery.
His research interests include molecular mechanisms of hepatic (liver)
injury, liver cancer cell biology, and gene therapy for liver cancer.
A member of
several professional and scientific societies — including
the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Society of University Surgeons,
and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons — Dr. Geller
has published 160 scientific papers and chapters. He has active
research grants from the National Institutes of Health and is the
principal investigator on industry-sponsored clinical trials for
liver cancer. He also is a professor of surgery at the University
of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Dr. Geller’s
practice is part of the UPMC Passavant multi-specialty surgery suite
scheduled to open this month at the Womancare Center. Other specialties
in the suite will include breast, minimally-invasive colorectal,
and thyroid surgery. The new multi-specialty surgery suite offers
local residents access to the specialized cancer care experts from
the UPMC Cancer Centers at UPMC Horizon’s Womancare Center
in Hermitage.
