Our medical professionals

We created the UPMC Horizon Birth Place to give women more choices for childbirth and to provide high-quality health care throughout their pregnancies.

Before the Birth of Your Baby
The months preceeding the birth of your baby are filled with excitement, anticipation, and sometimes a bit of apprehension. To help you plan for your new arrival and to provide information about pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the care of your newborn, the Birth Place's nursing staff invites expectant parents to attend a variety of educational classes.

If you need a well-trained, knowledgeable obstetrician, contact us.

The Birthing Experience
Our delivery suites are equipped with operating and recovery rooms for expected or unexpected cesarean sections and emergency situations.

  • LDR and postpartum rooms
New mothers are moved to comfortable postpartum rooms after delivering their babies in labor, delivery, and recovery rooms. Recent updates to our Shenango Valley campus include an isolation nursery, breastfeeding room, and a new family waiting area.

  • supplemental newborn-screening program
In addition to a state-required metabolic screening, UPMC Horizon participates in a supplemental newborn-screening program. This service enables newborns to be tested for additional metabolic disorders that show no visible signs immediately following birth. Readily identifying such disorders may allow physicians to treat problems before they cause permanent damage.

  • universal newborn hearing screenings
Early detection of hearing loss is especially important in preventing developmental delays and may occur with no previous family history or risk factors.

Before You Leave the Hospital
Before you leave the Birth Place, our staff will take time to teach you how to bathe, groom, feed, and nurture your baby as well as provide information about immunizations. We want you to feel relaxed and confident when you return home with your new baby.

Continuing Care at Home
After you have been home for several days, you can expect a follow-up call from one of our nurses, just to see how you are doing. Based on medical necessity, some new mothers will also receive home visits. Rest assured, if you have any questions or concerns before or after your baby is born, we're only a phone call away, 24 hours a day. Contact us.
