Medical Equipment
Recycling Program
Providing
Mercer County-Area Residents Access to Refurbished Medical Equipment
Mission
The Medical Equipment Recycling Program is a project funded by the
UPMC
Horizon Community Health Foundation. The program provides refurbished
medical equipment to people in UPMC Horizon's service area who lack
the insurance coverage or means to buy new medical equipment. In
addition, the program educates individuals and their family members
about other community-based resources that can address specific
needs. In 2007, the program helped 924 residents.
Among the pieces of
equipment the program supplies are:
- wheelchairs
- canes
- walkers
- hospital
beds
- bathroom
equipment, including tub benches, shower chairs, and potty chairs
- liftchairs
How the Program
Works
The Medical Equipment Recycling Program accepts donated medical equipment
from area residents who no longer need them or from organizations who
have collected the items. Volunteers help clean and refurbish the devices.
After a final inspection by a qualified professional, the equipment is
given to people in need.
How to Become
Part of the Program
The program could not operate without the support of volunteers. Equipment
and funding come from volunteer donors. In addition to cleaning and repairing
equipment, volunteers provide office support to the medical coordinator
and deliver the items to the people who need them.
Donate Your
Equipment
If you own medical equipment that is no longer used, donate it to the
Medical Equipment Recycling Program or make a cash donation to help purchase
necessary equipment and supplies. Cash donations are vital to continue
the valuable community service that the program provides. Contact
us to donate equipment or financial support.
Volunteer
Your Time and Talent
The program needs help transporting, cleaning, and refurbishing the equipment,
and the program needs volunteers to provide office support. Contact
us to learn how you can help.
