Dr.
Meyer earns MBA while providing humanitarian service
Greenville,
PA — Carl Meyer, DO, pediatrician and chairman of
UPMC Horizon’s Physician Health Committee, recently earned
a master’s degree in business administration from Alvernia
College, Reading, Pa.
Dr. Meyer was
part of a cohort of health care professionals who received MBAs
from Alvernia. The two-year program is dedicated to teaching the
business of medicine with classes covering topics such as strategic
management, accounting, information literacy, and marketing.
As a graduation
requirement, students were expected to complete a humanitarian service
project as an opportunity to apply skills acquired during their
studies and use them to benefit a community. Dr. Meyer and the other
physicians in the program took their services to Santo Domingo,
Dominican Republic, last year to assess the needs of the Bernadine
Franciscan Mission in the barrios of Los Tres Brazo. When they saw
a dilapidated public school in the mission neighborhood, they pledged
to raise money for a much-needed expansion of the local convent
school.
Dr. Meyer also
completed a capstone project that encompassed all course work. His
topic was, “Medical Record and Documentation Quality: A Peer
Review Assessment Tool.”
