UPMC
Horizon medical staff accepting scholarship applications
Farrell
and Greenville, PA — The trustees of the UPMC Horizon
Medical Staff Scholarship Fund are accepting scholarship applications
from local medical school students beginning Friday, Feb. 15 through
Tuesday, April 15.
The trustees
encourage medical students from the UPMC Horizon service area meeting
scholarship criteria to apply for the annual scholarship. Eligible
students must have successfully completed their first year of an
allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
Beginning in
1969, the former Greenville Regional Hospital medical staff contributed
income from school health examinations to a scholarship fund. This
money, along with contributions from the Greenville Regional Hospital
Surgical Department Hasenplug Fund, established the tradition of
awarding medical staff scholarships annually to medical students
from the local area. The scholarship tradition continued through
the mergers between Greenville Regional Hospital and Shenango Valley
Medical Center to form Horizon Hospital System and a later merger
with UPMC to form UPMC Horizon.
