UPMC
Horizon opens Center for Metabolic Medicine in the Shenango Valley
Farrell,
PA — UPMC Horizon now offers a more comprehensive
approach to treating patients with metabolic syndrome and related
disorders including diabetes, hypertension, and obesity with the
recent opening of the hospital’s new Center for Metabolic
Medicine.
Metabolic syndrome
is a collection of risk factors that make a patient more susceptible
to heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, and type 2 diabetes.
Some of these risk factors include hypertension (high blood pressure),
obesity, high blood lipid levels, and insulin resistance (high blood
sugar).
Treatment of
metabolic syndrome includes lifestyle modification, particularly
weight reduction. Medication may also be used to treat metabolic
syndrome.
UPMC Horizon’s Regional Diabetes Center, currently located
inside the Shenango Valley facility, and UPMC Horizon’s outpatient
nutrition program will relocate to the Center for Metabolic Medicine
at the end of the month.
The Center for
Metabolic Medicine is located at the Park Medical Building, 2120
Likens Lane, Farrell, adjacent to UPMC Horizon’s Shenango
Valley campus. To schedule an appointment at the center, call 724-983-8878.
