Visitation Guidelines
In the interest of supporting patient recovery, rest, and privacy, visitors are generally limited to two per patient at any one time. Visitors are asked to be considerate of the patient's condition in the length of their visit. The patient will enjoy a visit more when he or she is fully recovered. Visitors are also asked to be considerate of other patients. When a physician comes to the bedside to provide professional services, visitors are respectfully requested to leave the room.

Children under 5 years of age may not visit in the hospital except by special permission.

On the day of surgery, members of the immediate family may visit in all patient units prior to scheduled visiting hours unless the physician deems otherwise.

Visiting Hours

Private Rooms 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Semi-private Rooms 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Exceptions

  • Pediatrics Patients
Parents may visit their children from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. They may also visit throughout the day and night. The only restriction is that only one parent or designee may stay overnight.
  • Maternity Unit
Fathers may visit anytime. Other visitors — including siblings, adults, and children over age 5 — may visit from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Critical Care Unit
Immediate family may visit from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Only two members of the family are permitted at the bedside during the visiting time.
  • Transitional Care Centers
Family and friends may visit from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit
Family and friends may visit from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

These hours may be altered and/or adjusted to meet the needs of each individual patient and his or her family members.

Patient Satisfaction
UPMC prides itself on providing quality care to patients. All UPMC hospitals are accredited by the Joint Commission (formerly called Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, or JCAHO). If the patient believes his or her concerns about care or safety have not been addressed by the hospital, the patient also may contact the Joint Commission’s Office of Quality Monitoring by phone at 1-800-994-6610 or by e-mail at complaint@jointcommission.org.
