UPMC Horizon
has a tradition of active community support. Each month, about
250 community residents volunteer by assisting staff and patients.
We believe our volunteers are a vital link to the community.

Requirements
Individuals
14 years of age and older are invited to apply for a volunteer
position. In accordance with Department of Health regulations,
potential volunteers must receive a clearance for tuberculosis.
This test can be administered by the applicant's physician or
by the hospital's Occupational and Environmental Medicine Department
during normal business hours. Additional clearances may be required,
depending on the work area. A minimum of 40 hours of service is
expected. Volunteer
placements are made with consideration given to the interests,
availability, and suitability of the volunteer, as well as the
needs of the hospital.

Opportunities
Some of the areas our volunteers work in include:
- Information
and Emergency Desks
Greet patients and visitors, answer the phone, provide directions,
deliver flowers, e-cards, and mail.
- Surgical
Waiting Lounge
Keep family members informed of their loved one's surgery status
and offer refreshments.
- Patient
Transport
Transport patients to and from imaging and surgery, provide
wheelchair assistance to patients and visitors, discharge patients,
and deliver lab specimens.
- Gift
Shops
The Sunny Horizons Gift Shop at the Greenville campus and the
Hospitality Shop at the Shenango Valley campus are staffed seven
days a week by volunteers. Both shops have full service food
counters as well as flowers and gifts.
Other volunteer
positions include:
- Hosts
Visit patients, provide assistance, inquire about the patient's
stay, retrieve personal items, or just sit and visit.
- Nursing
Unit Ambassadors
Work on the inpatient floors by passing water, answering call
lights, and work as a courier by picking up and delivering items
throughout the hospital
- Departmental
Volunteers
Assist behind the scenes by putting charts together, preparing
large mailings, and making follow-up phone calls to patients
or families.
- Special
Project Volunteers
Assist UPMC Horizon staff throughout the year at numerous events
such as community health fairs and screenings, open houses, and
Foundation events. Volunteers also assist with the American Cancer
Society's "Daffodil Days," the American Heart Association's
"Winter Day Bouquets," and the March of Dimes "Walk
for the Cure."
Summer
Student Volunteer Program
High school students age 14 and older may apply for UPMC Horizon's
Summer Student Volunteer Program. Interested applicants may download
the Student Volunteer Packet,
fill it out, and return it to the Volunteer Services Department
by the date listed.

Here are some interesting facts about UPMC Horizon volunteers
that are a tribute to their hard work and dedication:
- Adult courier
volunteers walk an average of five miles a day, or 1,300 miles
a year.
- Volunteer
escorts transport nearly 25,000 patients a year.
- About 370
individuals volunteer each month.
- Volunteers
are assigned in almost every hospital department.
- Hospital
volunteers range in age from 14 to 88 years.
