About
the Womancare Center
The Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon, located in Hermitage, Pa.,
is affiliated with Magee-Womens
Hospital. The Womancare Center houses many medical specialties
and diagnostic services for women and all members of their families.
Services
The Womancare
Center offers the following diagnostic services for the entire
family:
- general radiology
- electrocardiogram
(EKG)
- laboratory
services (phlebotomy)
- open MRI
The following
services are available for women only:
While all
members of the family are welcome at the Womancare Center, a comfortable
and private waiting area is available for the services offered
just to women.
The Womancare
Center has an on-site radiologist for interpretation of x-rays.

Classes
Many insurance companies reimburse for prenatal classes,

- Lamaze
Prenatal Classes
Lamaze Prenatal Classes are four-week courses that offer expectant
parents insight into labor, delivery, post-partum, and newborn
care. Classes provide an informal and relaxed atmosphere encouraging
the exchange of questions and answers about birth and what typically
happens during the hospital stay. Classes are designed to inform
parents about:
signs
of labor
relaxation
skills
comfort measures
pain management through epidurals
breathing techniques
newborn care
The mother-to-be
and her support person have hands-on practice with various comfort
measures and rehearse for labor, which helps to decrease anxiety
and uncertainty regarding the upcoming birth. Instructors are
Lamaze-certified.
- Lamaze
Weekend Prenatal Classes
These are two-day courses offered on Thursday evenings and for
eight hours on Saturdays. It offers expectant parents insight
into labor, delivery, post-partum, and newborn care. Classes
are designed to inform parents about:

of labor
relaxation
skills
comfort measures
pain management through epidurals
breathing techniques
newborn care
The mother-to-be
and her support person will have hands-on practice with various

are Lamaze-certified.
- Refresher
Lamaze Prenatal Class
The objective of the Refresher Lamaze Prenatal Class is to provide
an overview of birthing options and coping strategies. The target
audience is second- or third-time parents and mothers who have
had a previous Cesarean section. The course content is based on
the needs of the participants. Class is informal and encourages
questions, concerns, and open discussion.
- The
Breastfeeding Class
This is a two-hour educational session for expectant parents to
help moms-to-be feel confident about the choice to breastfeed.
Topics include getting started with positioning baby and latching-on,
recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and continuing
breastfeeding whether at home or at work. Lactation consultants
will answer questions and address concerns regarding the benefits
of breastfeeding. Support people (including spouses) are encouraged
to attend.
- The
Sibling Class
This class introduces children to the role of big brother or sister.
Some activities include making a "Welcome Home" poster
for the newborn, t-shirt painting, a tour of the obstetrics department,
and snack time. Children ages 3 to 12 are welcome.
- The
Family and Friends Pediatric CPR Course
This CPR course focuses on basic one-person rescue CPR
and relief of foreign body obstruction (choking) for conscious
children and infants. An instruction booklet is included with
the cost of the course.
Support
Groups
The Womancare Center hosts the following support groups:
- Weight Loss
Surgery Support Group (third Tuesday of the month, 7 p.m.)
- Mercer County
Breast Cancer Support Group (second Wednesday of the month, 7
p.m.)
- Lupus Support
Group (third Thursday of the month, 6:30 p.m.)
- Breastfeeding
Support Group (second Tuesday of the month, 11 a.m., also
available third Wednesday of the month at the UPMC Horizon Wellness
Center in Greenville)

Research
Studies
Many research
studies offered through Magee-Womens
Hospital are available at the Womancare Center. To become part
of a study, call the contact number listed in the information for
each study, and complete the online study participant questionnaire.
The information will only be used in conjunction with participating
in research studies through the Primary Health Network and the office
of Michael Abdul-Malak, MD,
and will not be shared with anyone for any reason. For more information,
