Training
at UPMC Horizon
Doctor
to patient
At UPMC Horizon, we take pride in the fact that our doctor/patient
relationships have been built on one unwavering principle: we treat
patients the same way we would like to be treated, with care, compassion
and respect.
This commitment,
combined with our low doctor-to-patient ratio, provides residents
and interns with an exceptional opportunity to become involved in
patient care on a one-to-one basis. From the very beginning, you
will assume responsibility for your patients’ health and well-being.
From day one,
you will have “hands-on” experience in treating patients.
As you make your rounds at our Shenango Valley and Greenville facilities,
you will have the opportunity to become personally involved with
patients while diagnosing a wide variety of medical conditions.
You also will
have the advantage of treating your patients with the most up-to-date
medical equipment available.
Doctor
to Doctor
When you train as an intern or resident at UPMC Horizon, you can
expect to receive the same personal, individualized attention that
we extend to our patients.
Working side-by-side
with expert physicians, you will learn how to provide care that
is both professional and compassionate. We boast an extremely low
resident/intern to physician ratio that allows you to establish
a close personal relationship with your mentor. You will find that
when working at UPMC Horizon you are more likely to be treated as
a peer than you might be at most larger hospitals.
In each area
of study, residents are expected to develop the ability to diagnose
and treat patients, as well as create well-organized and complete
medical records. You will learn to recommend appropriate diagnostic
and therapeutic approaches based on patient histories, physical
examinations, laboratory tests and diagnostic techniques, and procedures.
Residents also will take primary responsibility for the care of
their individual patients under the guidance and direction of experienced
physicians.
Our flexible
internship program lasts one year and allows you to focus on a subspecialty,
if desired. You will perform many duties which include recording
patient histories, writing differential diagnoses, making daily
rounds with the attending physician and resident, and participating
in grand rounds.
Interns also
will visit patients daily, describe and chart each patient’s
progress, perform physical examinations, participate in departmental
conferences and attend medical and specialty sessions.
Interns and
residents will participate on committees such as house staff meetings,
Medical Care Committee, OMT Committee and cancer conferences.
Whether doctor
to patient or doctor to doctor, the special one-to-one relationships
nurtured at UPMC Horizon benefit everyone involved.
